More Critics Awards and Golden Globes Nominations Announced!

It was another busy week for the various critics organizations and other precursor awards, as the last ones to get their choices in this month announced their winners and their nominees this past week.

First up, one of the more prestigious film critics organizations followed their West Coast cousin last week by announcing their choices, and their Best Picture choice was certainly a surprise, and made every critics organization so far having picked a different film for Best Picture.

This awards season is shaping up to be all over the place, with only a handful of front-runners for Oscar nods, and some real wide open races, most notably in the Best Picture race. But first up, here were the choices of the New York Film Critics.

  • Best Picture: Topsy-Turvy
  • Best Foreign Language Film: All About My Mother (Spain)
  • Best Director: Mike Leigh - Topsy-Turvy
  • Best Actor: Richard Farnsworth - The Straight Story
  • Best Actress: Hilary Swank - Boys Don't Cry
  • Best Supporting Actor: John Malkovich - Being John Malkovich
  • Best Supporting Actress: Catherine Keener - Being John Malkovich
  • Best Screenplay: Jim Taylor and Alexander Payne - Election
  • Best First Feature: Spike Jonze - Being John Malkovich
  • Best Non-Fiction Film: Buena Vista Social Club
  • Best Animated Feature: South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
  • Best Cinematography: Freddie Francis - The Straight Story
The NY Critics were the first to select the recently released Topsy-Turvy as their Best Picture of the year.  Hilary Swank however has been winning critics awards right and left, making her a very big frontrunner. The New York Critics have frequently gone for more offbeat choices in recent years, and this year is no exception.

The Toronto Film Critics up in Canada announced their choices the same day last week, and here they are ...
