National Board of Review Selections 1999 and First Oscar Controversy

The 1999 Awards Season is officially underway. This week, the National Board of Review announced their choices, and since they are the first ones to do so, they officially kick off the exciting awards season ... next will be all the various critics organizations and their choices.

But let's get right to the National Board of Review choices and see how they help or hurt certain film's chances come Oscar time ...

The National Board of Review Choices -- December 7, 1999

  • Best Picture: American Beauty
  • Best Foreign Language Film: All About My Mother (Spain)
  • Best Director: Anthony Minghella - The Talented Mr Ripley
  • Best Actor: Russell Crowe - The Insider
  • Best Actress: Janet McTeer - Tumbleweeds
  • Best Supporting Actor: Phllip Seymour Hoffman - Magnolia and The Talented Mr Ripley
  • Best Supporting Actress: Julianne Moore - An Ideal Husband, A Map of The World, Cookie's Fortune, Magnolia
  • Best Debut Director: Kimberly Pierce - Boys Don't Cry
  • Best Screenplay: John Irving - The Cider House Rules
  • Best Breakthrough Performance: Hilary Swank - Boys Don't Cry and Wes Bentley - American Beauty Best Documentary: Buena Vista Social Club
  • Special Achievement: Tim Robbins - Cradle Will Rock
  • Freedom of Expression: Michael Mann - The Insider

The National Board of Review Choices  - Top Five Foreign Language Films of 1999 

  1. All About My Mother (Spain)
  2. Run Lola Run (Germany)
  3. East-West (France)
  4. Cabaret Balkan (Yugoslavia)
  5. The Emperor and The Assassin (China)

In addition, Clint Eastwood has been tapped to receive a career achievement award from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.

The group has also partnered with Biography magazine to honor John Frankenheimer with the Billy Wilder Award for excellence in directing.

Arthur Laurents is slated to be honored for screenwriting, while Jeanine Basinger has been tapped to receive the William K. Everson Award for film history for her book "Silent Stars.". 

American Beauty
notched its first Best Film prize, in what may be the first of many. 

Russell Crowe's performance in The Insider was particularly excellent, and it was good to see his name claim one of the first acting prizes.
