Movie Update First Weekend of December 1999
Not much new awards wise or movie wise this week ... only two potential Oscar candidates are being released in theatres this weekend,
Holy Smoke starring Kate Winslet and
The End of the Affair with Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore. Both films have potential for major acting nominations, but wouldn't expect much beyond that.
Toy Story 2 did amazing box office business last weekend, and it may be lined up for music nominations, and a Best Original Screenplay nod certainly looks deserving (if you remember, the original Toy Story did have its screenplay nominated in 1995).
The Green Mile finally opens next weekend, and then after that, it's an onslaught of potential Oscar nominees and winners, including Man on the Moon, Any Given Sunday, Magnolia, The Hurricane, Angela's Ashes, Fantasia 2000, and much more.
One of the songs from Toy Story 2, "When She Loved Me" performed by Sarah McLachlen and written by Randy Newman, is undoubtedly the song to beat so far for the Best Music-Original Song Oscar. It's a very moving and beautiful song sung by a doll who reflects sadly on the days when she was loved by a young girl who owned her, only to see her grow up and ultimately toss her away.
Here are predictions on some or the possible contenders for the Best Music-Original Song Oscar for the 72nd Annual nominations ... here is what may get the five nominations ...
- "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story 2
- "Still" from Dogma (performed by Alanis Morrisette),
- "You'll Be In My Heart" from Tarzan (performed by Phil Collins),
- "The Great Beyond" from Man on the Moon (performed by R.E.M.),
- "You Sang To Me" from Runaway Bride (performed by Marc Anthony)
All great songs, and it is hoped that Alanis's wonderful and original song from Dogma is nominated, as well as R.E.M.'s brilliant song from the upcoming Andy Kaufman bio-pic, Man on the Moon. R.E.M. also does their first original score for a film, and let's hope to see it nominated for Original Score.
Other potential candidates include "Son of Man" from Tarzan, "For The Love of the Game" from For Love of the Game performed by SemiSonic, and the lesser known "Lift Me Up", a very good song by Bruce Springsteen from the little-seen film Limbo.
And speaking of musical score, along with R.E.M.'s score, it is hoped Basil Poledouris is nominated for the score to For Love of the Game, as well as Howard Shore for Dogma.
