Academy Awards News, Updated Predictions,Season Schedule

The first submission from Bhutan - Khyentse Norbu's The Cup, a comedy about a young boy who gets a television to watch the World Cup and destabilizes an entire community of monks in the process, will be released by Fine Line Features.

As the weeks get closer to the Oscars, we will most likely revise our picks for who will get nominated, and that usually changes because of further analysis, and especially once some of the films get released.

For example, in my initial predicting, we gave The Messenger:  The Story of Joan of Arc a strong chance for a Best Picture nod, and after it was released and all the terrible reviews came out, it was pretty clear that it wouldn't get any major nominations. So anyway, here are our picks as they stand for this week, right now only for the six major categories:

Best Picture
American Beauty, The Insider, The Hurricane, The Green Mile, Man on the Moon

Best Actor
Kevin Spacey in American Beauty, Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon, Richard Farnsworth in The Straight Story, Russell Crowe in The Insider, Denzel Washington in The Hurricane

Best Actress
Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut, Annette Bening in American Beauty, Emily Watson in Angela's Ashes, Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry, Jodie Foster in Anna and the King

Best Supporting Actor
Chris Cooper in American Beauty, Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense, Christopher Plummer in The Insider, Wes Bentley in American Beauty, Michael Caine in The Cider House Rules

Best Supporting Actress
Toni Collette in The Sixth Sense, Thora Birch in American Beauty, Julianne Moore in Magnolia,  Angelina Jolie in Girl Interrupted, Cate Blanchett in The Talented Mr. Ripley

Best Director
Frank Darabont for The Green Mile, Stanley Kubrick for Eyes Wide Shut, Sam Mendes for American Beauty, Paul Thomas Anderson for Magnolia, Michael Mann for The Insider

So anyway, that's our attempt still very early to predict who will be nominated for the Oscars when those nominations are read on February 15.

Movie release watch:

  • Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow opened last week, and may be a contender in some of the technical categories.
  • This week, Toy Story 2 opens, and based on advance reviews, could score another Screenplay nod. Arnold Schwarzenegger's new film End of Days also opens this week, and if it manages to get any nominations, it will only be in
