This choice was pretty easy ... the two Godfather films are clearly classics of cinema, and the original is one of the finest pieces of cinema ever made. And Spielberg's achievement with Schindler's List is a very clear choice as the second greatest film of the Best Picture winning films.

All clearly, great achievements of the cinema, even if critics may not have agreed with their choice as Best Picture in their individual years.
But the Academy has made some really unworthy choices over the years as well ... here are the films that would rank clearly at the bottom of a ranking of all the Best Picture winning films ... and these are all films you clearly have to question as to why they were selected ... they just don't belong in the canon of quality represented above and by so many other great Best Picture winning films ...

Still, one of the more interesting things recommended to serious movie lovers who want to look at movie history is to sit down and watch all the Best Picture winning films on home video, and more than 95% of them are available on video or DVD or both.
So if you're looking for some ways to wind up this hot summer, rent or buy a classic Oscar winning Best Picture, cozy in with some nice air conditioning, and you will not be disappointed.
