A Look Back at the 1989 Academy Awards: Surprises and Upsets


So that set the stage for the big upset when the quieter film Driving Miss Daisy won the big prize for Best Picture, especially after Oliver Stone was awarded Best Director for Born on the Fourth of July.

So while the Oscars given were big surprises, the telecast itself remained a memorable one, and one of the finest moments of any recent Oscar telecast came towards the end, when Diana Ross led the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion audience in singing "Over the Rainbow", one of the greatest film songs of all time.

And then on a huge video screen behind her, the live remotes all were brought together, and the others all around the world joined in singing the memorable song. It was an incredible moment of seeing the world together for a brief moment, and was one of those Oscar moments that end up transcending the Oscar telecast, and it remains in our memories forever.
