  • The controversy over Elia Kazan's honorary Oscar didn't cause too much a stir when the actual award was given. The camera clearly caught the disgust of some (Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, Nick Nolte) and the praise of others (Karl Malden looking around, Warren Beatty, Kurt Russell).
  • Chris Rock provided some hilarious moments presenting the Sound Effects Editing Oscar providing his own background track to a clip from Titanic.

    All in all, it was an exciting show, mostly due to the unpredictability of the year's awards. There were no real sure things.

    Next week, we'll look back through the history of the Oscars to look at some of the other big upsets in the Best Picture race, and discuss in a little more detail about the battle between Miramax and Dreamworks over Shakespeare and Ryan, and my own personal reaction to Shakespeare's win. And in further weeks to come, more reaction to this year's Oscars and discussion of Oscar's past.
