In a rare public presentation of a film believed to be lost, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will launch its new "Lost and Found" series with the screening of the 1927 film "Sorrell and Son" on Thursday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.

Marking the film's first screening in the United States in over 60 years, "Sorrell and Son" recently was discovered among the Academy Film Archive's holdings and has been restored using current technology. Michael Mortilla will accompany the screening with live music on piano.

Suffering from deterioration, and with its last reel missing, the film has had its ending reconstructed by the Academy Film Archive using still photographs and title cards to allow for an almost complete viewing experience for audiences.

Written and directed by Herbert Brenon, the United Artists release was nominated in the "best direction of a dramatic picture" category for the first Academy Awards for the years 1927-1928. The silent, black-and-white film starring H.B. Warner and Nils Asther features a father and son who try to maintain their relationship and integrity despite falling into poverty and being deserted by their wife and mother, portrayed by Anna Q. Nilsson.

Based on a popular 1925 novel by George Warrick Deeping, the film was photographed by James Wong Howe, with art direction by William Cameron Menzies.

"Lost and Found" is a periodic screening series designed to showcase archival prints of films that have been recently rediscovered or restored to improve the presentational quality. Some films within the series, such as "Sorrell and Son," may be incomplete or damaged. The series will allow opportunity for rare access to "lost" films as well as bring attention to success stories of film preservation.

Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with valid identification. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Academy's headquarters building at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, by mail, or on the night of the program, if still available. The Linwood Dunn Theater is located at the Academy's Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study at 1313 North Vine Street, Hollywood. Free parking is available behind the building through the entrance on Homewood Avenue. For more information call 310-247-3000, ext. 111.
