Millions of votes are in and the nation's moviegoers have chosen The Passion of the Christ as the Best Picture of 2004, according to the results of the 10th Annual Moviefone Moviegoer Awards poll on the Moviefone.com website. The win for The Passion of the Christ illustrates the difference between the tastes of moviegoers versus industry organizations and critics' groups, which have given little recognition to the film in award ceremonies.

Moviegoers across the country cast millions of votes at Moviefone.com for the winners in traditional categories such as Best Picture and Best Actor, as well as offbeat ones such as Revlon's Sexiest Kiss and Hottest Rising Star. Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney, stars of Universal Pictures' The Wedding Date, kicked off this year's awards at a January 20th press conference in Los Angeles, where they announced the nominees, also chosen by moviegoers. Emmy Rossum, winner of the Hottest Rising Star category had this to say after receiving her award: "I'm very grateful that people are enjoying my work and are excited about my future! I love making movies, but in the end movies are made for those who watch them; and I'm glad that those who watch mine, enjoy them. It makes me happy to know that I'm able to bring joy to moviegoers." Emma Watson, who won her second Moviegoer Award in the Best Supporting Actress category, said: "I am shocked to have won this award with such eminent competition. I am so excited and pleased. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. It really means a lot." "The Passion of the Christ was a huge box office smash and evoked powerful responses from millions of moviegoers, yet it was largely overlooked by conventional award programs," said Steven Yee, Vice President and General Manager, AOL(R) Movies and Moviefone. "Giving movie fans the opportunity to honor movies and performances regardless of the reaction from critics and industry groups is exactly why we created the Moviegoer Awards ten years ago. We offer our congratulations to all of this year's winners."
