in the film industry. The award will be presnted on June 10, 2004 at a lavish ceremony at the Kodak Theater at Hollywood & Highland, and broadcast on the USA Network sometime shortly thereafter. "I am honored to be selected by the AFI for the work I love doing -- the event is in June and that might give me enough time to compose a list of all the people I'm beholden to in my life and to whom I owe everything," Streep said of her selection. Jon Avnet, chair of the AFI board of directors and co-chair with Bob Daly of the AFI Life Achievement nominating committee, said "Meryl Streep is the ultimate film artist -- for her generation and for all generations." The Screen Actors Guild also made their announcement of their latest selection for the next SAG Life Achievement Award (the 40th such award in their history). Karl Malden will be receiving the next Life Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild during their upcoming 10th Annual Awards, to be presented on February 22. SAG President Melissa Gilbert said, "In a career spanning six decades, Karl Malden has superbly achieved the goal of every actor--to bring an extraordinarily rich range of iconic characters to the screen and stage. In naming him our 40th Life Achievement Award recipient, Screen Actors Guild honors Karl Malden not only for his marvelous achievements as a performer, but for his commanding leadership of our industry and his dedication to perpetuating its legacy. On a personal note, making the call to inform Mr. Malden of this honor was one of the most moving and joyous tasks of my presidency. He is a man I have always looked up to, for many years and many reasons. We are all honored by his acceptance of this award." Both of these are excellent choices, and they should present some wonderfully nostalgic moments when they both receive their awards. Turning to news from the Academy itself, it was announced this past week that a record-breaking 55 countries have submitted films to be considered for the next Foreign Language Film Oscar. It breaks the record set last year, which saw 54 countries submitting films for consideration. As you may or may not know, each country is allowed to select one film to submit to the Academy membership for consideration for the Foreign Film Oscar, and for the next Academy Awards, here are the films
