87) Thelma & Louise in THELMA & LOUISE (Geena Davis & Susan Sarandon) They became icons very quickly, as the film took us all by surprise. Two amazingly well written and powerfully performed women who find themselves on the run when Louise shoots a man who was trying to rape Thelma. Both actresses find amazing levels of depth to both these characters, making Ridley Scott's film much more than just a chase movie.
86) Walter Neff in DOUBLE INDEMNITY (Fred MacMurray) Neff is one of the most memorable characters of all time from the film noir genre, in this quintissential film of the genre. Key scene .. watch the interplay between Neff and the sultry Barbara Stanwyck with the witty dialogue as she shoots him down, "Why don't you ask my husband?" "That tears it."
85) Forrest Gump in FORREST GUMP (Tom Hanks) Tom Hanks deservedly won his second Oscar for this wonderfully unique character who finds himself involved in nearly every major historical event from the 1950's to the 1980's. From ping pong to Vietnam to visits to the White House to discovering the Watergate burglars ... his journeys made all the more fascinating by the fact that he is often not aware of the history happening around him, as he remains solely dedicated to finding his one true love, Jenny.
84) Russell Hammond in ALMOST FAMOUS (Billy Crudup) Cameron Crowe created such a unique nostalgic look back at the rock world of the 1970's, and Billy Crudup played Russell as a guitarist who is lost on his own search for something real, all while maintaining his one true love for music.
83) L.B. 'Jeff' Jeffries in REAR WINDOW (Jimmy Stewart) One of Alfred Hitchcock's most interesting films was this 1950's classic, giving Jimmy Stewart one of his most unique and different performances, as a man who ends up finding himself getting a little too involved in the people who he spies on from his apartment window.
82) Frank Serpico in SERPICO (Al Pacino) Pacino has created a number of memorable characters (believe me, you'll see his name again as we get closer to the top ten!). Serpico was an interesting character, a man who must struggle to preserve his own moral fiber by exposing a system of police corruption.
81) Joel Goodson in RISKY BUSINESS (Tom Cruise) One of Cruise's earliest performances was truly one of his best. Teenage comedies can be pretty much hit or miss, with more misses than hits. But RISKY BUSINESS hits all the right notes, at providing something more unique and with more depth than your average teen comedy of the 1980's. As a young man who actually cares about his future to get into college, it's amazing to watch Cruise's performance as he ends up having to deal with events out of control when a call girl begins to take over. Plus it's a powerful portrait of one young man's coming of age.
