This is certainly a worthy concern, and one I hadn't really considered when I trumpeted the new, earlier timeframe. It also remains to be seen how this change by the Academy will affect the entire rest of the awards season, with all the other various awards, especially big events like the guild honors and the Golden Globes. It's possible that Oscar nominations could already be out by the time the Golden Globe awards take place, if the Globes stay on their current schedule, which could have all sorts of new ramifications for the precursor awards' effect on the ultimate Oscar outcome. But we'll have to see ... my prediction is that most of the precursor awards will also move their schedules up, and we'll have two months of solid awards from various organizations. I don't think anyone will want to be seen as following the Oscars, since the Academy Awards always tend to mark the end of the film awards season. But we'll see what happens ...

So that's the latest from the Academy. In the meantime, the Summer 2003 films continue to come out, and we're on the brink of perhaps the biggest summer release ... the long awaited sequel The Matrix Reloaded is about to be unleashed in theaters nationwide, one of the biggest event pictures of the year. So the summer boxoffice rolls on ...
