IMITATING MOM
The most rewarding and enjoyable part of being a breeder for so many years has been the opportunity to study mother dogs with their young. It is fascinating to see how deeply ingrained Mom's instincts are and to watch the little ones progress through the various stages of puppyhood. It has taught me a great deal about how to continue raising the puppies and how to communicate with them in a way they understand. Think about Motherhood. Regardless of the species, the role of a Mother is all about survival. Whether human, bear, cougar, wolf or dog - a Mother nurtures, protects and teaches her young to be able to function and survive in their particular world.
Every species has certain inherent instincts. A good Mother tempers and strengthens the natural instincts of her young to enable them to survive. The human Mother teaches her young to be independent, productive adults who can fend for and support themselves. The Mother bear teaches her cub how to fish and forage for food. The cougar's Mother teaches it to hunt. Wolf and dog Mothers teach their young what they will need to be able to function within a pack. This is their survival. It is the basis of how they function and interact with one another. The pack means food, safety and the continuation of the species. Pack instinct is the strongest insinct of all and it is at the root of their existance from the moment they are born. A good Mom begins early to teach her puppies what is expected of them. Although she remains nurturing and protective, the puppies are never spoiled. Rules are clearly set and broken rules are never forgiven. Mom reacts swiftly and consistently showing the pups what will and will not be tolerated. She does not correct a behavior one day and then ignore it the next. Each and every time they cross the line she corrects them. She does not yell or issue idle threats. She does not bully, abuse and she certainly does not give time outs. By being consistent, a Mother dog instills in her puppies self-confidence and trust. The puppies are never confused. Do they hate her or fear her? Absolutely not! They respect her and the affection between them is obvious!
Before pups are even steady on their feet they begin the playfight and wrestling stage that will continue throughout their lives. Watching their little personalities develop is one of the most enjoyable periods for the breeder or onlooker. This, however, is not just play to the puppies. They are already beginning to establish their positions within the litter. A good Mom not only allows this, she encourages it. It is the natural progression. One of these puppies may eventually grow up to be a leader.
