With great strength and purpose, he cut a path through the deep snow. He plowed up the embankment, making it to the top with ease. The last thing they saw was his waving tail. Again they sat back to wait and dared to hope.
On the other side of the hill, Arnold started the downward climb to the highway. Visibility was poor but through the drifting snow he spotted lights, vanishing then reappearing. Picking up speed, he headed towards them. When he finally reached the highway, he could see it was a car. With his tail wagging furiously, he broke into a run and chased after it.
The RCMP officer carefully scanned both sides of the road, checking for stranded vehicles. Glancing briefly in his rearview mirror, he returned his gaze to the road ahead. “What the blazes…?” he muttered as he quickly looked back into the mirror. He couldn’t believe his eyes. It looked like a very large dog chasing his car. “Where the devil could he have come from?” the officer exclaimed out loud. Bringing the car to a stop, he undid his belt and climbed out, heading towards the rear of the vehicle.
The dog had stopped too and was staring at him. Recognizing the breed, he called to the dog. “C’mon boy! It’s too cold out here, even for you.” Arnold hesitated, then took off at full tilt, galloping towards the man. The officer spotted something hanging from his collar. Why, it looked like a neatly folded piece of paper! “What have you got there boy? Let me have a look.” As the big dog reached him, the officer knelt down. Arnold ran into his waiting arms and ate him.
