There is much more to a dog show than just the judging of dogs. Tour the venue to acquaint yourself with the entire scope of the show. Spend some time in the grooming set-up to see how the dogs are housed and watch as they are prepared for the ring. Visit the show secretary's table and arrange for the mailing of premium lists. Most show giving clubs will have a booth or flier table with show entries and information on handling classes, training, seminars, sanction matches and other activities. This information will be beneficial in planning your training program.

In the vendor area, you will usually find a number of show suppliers with products that are not readily available in the average pet store. You will need to invest in essential show equipment and supplies. If you are starting with a puppy, his needs will change as he matures. Most newcomers are overwhelmed by the amount of merchandise that is specifically targeted at the show dog. There are any number of grooming tools, solutions for every type of coat, a wide assortment of leads and collars, tack boxes to hold everything, crates, grooming tables, pens, dollies, and even kennel building materials. From specially formulated food to breed specific novelties and collectibles, show dogs are a huge industry. To keep your costs from escalating, it is wise to consult with your breeder as to the needs of your particular breed.

Properly preparing for the show ring consists of two stages. The first of which is to prepare yourself. The second is to prepare your dog. By taking advantage of any waiting period and using that time to educate yourself, you will be ready to concentrate more effectively on your new show dog when he arrives.
