As a novice, you must rely on the knowledge and experience of others. You will learn from everyone but your best teachers will be those with high standards who have attained success. Many exhibitors attribute their achievements to the advice and guidance of a mentor. Very often this is the breeder who got them started. Develop a good relationship with your breeder. The knowledge you gain will be invaluable and the bond you share may lead to a lasting friendship.

*Warning - winning can be addictive.

Subsequent articles in this series will deal with getting started - the many resources at your disposal, show training a puppy, grooming and presentation, ring procedure and etiquette, sanction matches, etc. - and, finally, your debut in the ring at a championship show.
