SENSIBLE CHOICES3. The Advantages of a Purebred: The greatest advantage in choosing a purebred is that of predictability. While dogs of the same breed vary somewhat in personality, they all have the same physical characteristics that are distinctive of that breed. All Afghans have lots of hair. All Dalmatians have spots and all Pit Bulls have very big teeth. By studying a breed's background and the job it was bred to perform, you will gain an insight into its temperament and basic instincts. Herding is second nature to a Bouvier. If there are no sheep, children will suffice. A Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever will retrieve everything in sight. If the neighbors have pet rodents, it would be perfectly natural for the Cairn Terrier to....... well, you know what terriers do! Choosing a purebred will enable you to determine the kind of care your puppy will require as an adult and how his instincts and temperament will adapt to your lifestyle. 4. Purchasing Your Pet: Puppies, puppies, puppies - free, cheap, expensive - with papers, without papers - in the pet stores, in the newspapers, on the web, at the flea market, on the bulletin board at the mall, at the pound. There are so many sources! How do you choose? The answer is simple. Dealing with a conscientious breeder, whose number one priority is the welfare of his or her puppies, will greatly increase your chances of success. These are knowledgeable people who are dedicated to the betterment of their breeds. They test for genetic problems, offer health and temperament guarantees and require that pets be spayed or neutered. Good breeders are always actively involved in the dog community and if they feel their breed is inappropriate for you, they can refer you to other reputable breeders. If you think you are in a position to provide a home for an unwanted dog, there are any number that need rescuing. Be aware, however, that dogs who end up in shelters usually have problems. Many can be rehabilitated to make wonderful companions but it takes a very special owner with an enormous amount of time and patience. Almost all purebred clubs have rescue organizations for their particular breeds. They are always looking for good homes and will help determine if you can adequately provide for one of these needy dogs. 5. Where To Find A Breeder At a dog show, of course!
