Mother Knows Best

My mother has this saying, "Listen to what your mother says and you'll be sleeping on a feather bed." All in all, she is just telling me she knows best and that her advice will keep me from going in the wrong direction. From time to time that saying echoes in my mind, but never was it more prevalent than when we were planning my wedding. Mom did know quiet a few ways of cutting corners when dealing with the wedding cost. However after a while, I began to notice that she was trying to live her dream wedding through mine. In a way it was sweet, yet in another I was totally against it. I had my own ideas of what my dream wedding would be like brewing in my imagination for the last twenty six years and I was dead set on obtaining it.

However, mothers do try to relive their weddings through their daughters. They want to for fill every aspect that was lacking in their own prior wedding. For my mother, she was married at a courthouse without the joyous consent and congratulations of her parents. She did not want that for me, so she began to plan a simple but elegant wedding.

As we began to plan together, I soon realized how large of a generation gap there was between us. Mom was very traditional and I wanted to venture more into new trendy wedding ideas. It seemed we clashed everywhere except on the wedding dress design. More than one agitated conversation passed between us in the six months it took to plan the biggest day of my life. Yet even though my mom and I had this generation gap of wedding ideas between us, we both tried to understand the other's position and work out any problems that arose.

Money, as you may have already assumed, was the deciding factor on every decision. Most women today do not rely on their parents to pay for their weddings, which is traditional, because these women now are apart of the working force. They can afford to make their own dream wedding come true. Because of tradition, many parents help their daughters with some of the financial aspects of their wedding while others assume the cost of everything. Paying for a wedding is no small thing either. Weddings can cost anywhere from nothing to way into the thousands and thousands of dollars. It all depends on what kind of wedding you want and what you can afford.
