More About Me

Last week, I told you a bit about my first two years and how hard they were for me. This week, I'm going to explain how I came to live with Mary and Dwight and how I got my name. I was born on August 31, 2000, on a farm. I stayed with my mother and siblings there until I was 8 weeks old. I had to be weaned and become independent before I moved to a new home. In the meantime, Mary and Dwight had to put their American Eskimo, Snowball, to sleep because he had Renal Kidney Disease. He was in a lot of pain and Mary knew it was her duty to put Snowball down. After all, he had been a loving and faithful companion for 13 years. It was now time for her to be faithful to him and help him to die without fear, pain, or losing his dignity. (A photo of Snowball is at the top of this article.) It was the hardest thing Mary ever had to do in her life. I know this because I've heard her say it. But really, it was Dwight who had a harder time. He had just had several heart attacks and was very upset over the loss of his companion. The doctor advised Mary to get another dog immediately to help lessen Dwight's stress. Mary called my breeder and asked him if he had any male pups left. He did - one, which was me. Mary and Dwight brought their grandsons, Brandon and Jordan, to see me and everyone fell in love with me. At that time, my color was different than it is now. I was a light grey color with white markings. I was very pretty, or so they thought. They decided to bring me home. The way I got my name was rather funny. Mary wanted to call me Mikalak (pronounced Mik-a-lack), which means "little one" in Inuit. Brandon and Jordan couldn't say the name, as they were very young at the time. They decided to call me Meeko. Eventually, everyone started calling me that, and today I'm known only as Meeko. I like my name. It means, "little one with a big heart." Though I'm no longer little, I do have a big heart. The name suits me. Well, that's all for this time. I'll be back soon with more about my life.
