My Name is Meeko

Hi, Kids,

My name is Meeko. I'm an Alaskan Malamute. I look exactly like a purebred, but I'm not. I would not pass the standards set out by the American Kennel Club. You can see my picture at the top of this article. See how my ears are tipped forward? Well, I don't particularly like cameras.

I live in southern Ontario, Canada, with my owners Mary and Dwight. They are very good to me. I am well fed, well groomed and well exercised. This is very important for large dogs like myself. I weigh 90 pounds and my veterinarian, Dr. Stevenson, says I'm very healthy.

I was born on August 31, 2000. I had 5 brothers and sisters that I never see. That doesn't really matter. I came to live with Mary and Dwight in November, 2000. For a while I did miss my mother and siblings, but then I began to establish my place in the pack.

This was a trying time for me. I wanted to be boss and had much to learn. It took me almost two years of training to know my place. I was frisky, disobedient at times, and was a bit destructive. Mary and Dwight persevered (kept trying) and I finally settled down.

The first two years here, I had to stay in a wire crate when Mary and Dwight went out, because I destroyed things and got into mischief. I'm glad those days are over. Mary started letting me out of the crate for short periods of time when she left the house. She extended the times (made them longer) until she could leave me in the house for hours.

I enjoy my life here. I'm the lowest member of the pack. I know my place. Sometimes I try to overstep my boundaries. When this happens, Mary quickly puts me in my place. She can have a sharp tongue when I don't follow the rules, but I know she loves me very much. It is right for her to expect me to obey.

Well, that's a little bit about me. I'll be back soon to tell you more about my life here.
