Kemah-therapy on the Beach

In Texas, when spring flowers fade, hot summer isn't far away and many people feel the pull of the ocean. When the sun beats down on a scorched summer earth, they long to face the salty sea breeze as it carries the cries of gulls above a sandy white beach.

Quickly becoming a favorite seaside resort is the little town of Kemah, which gets its name from the Indian word meaning "face the wind". Just minutes from downtown Houston, Kemah offers themed restaurants, bay cruises for every occasion, novelty shopping, waterfront entertainment for children and adults, exciting boardwalk activities, and accommodations from the luxurious to the laid-back.

The Spirit of Texas, a popular entertainment boat, churns the Gulf, hosting dinner cruises, wedding cruises, private parties, and business events. It is one of the nation's most modern paddle wheel boats. With Island Princess Charters, you can book a "Boat and Breakfast" for two or an elegant "Sunset Cruise" for your entire party. Choose from two boats, the Odyssey, an air-conditioned 63 foot motor yacht accommodating 49 passengers or the 57 foot Island Princess accommodating 39 guests. Or you can opt for one of the 30 minute Kemah Baywatch Tours or a Kemah Dinner Cruise offered by Star Fleet Yachts. If you're feeling especially wild, you can climb on Joe's Boardwalk Beast for a thrilling speedboat ride powered by two 16 Cylinder Turbo Deutz Diesel Engines rated at 1300 Horsepower each!

If cruises are a little steep for the pocketbook and you'd rather just hang out on the Boardwalk, there are any number of amusements to choose from including shopping, arcade games, a rock climbing wall, dancing fountains with 75 different water jets, the 36-foot Carousel, 65-foot Ferris Wheel, CP Huntington train, and some newer rides such as The Boardwalk Tower, Inverter, and Crazy Submarine. Kids will love the train-themed Toy Crossing where they can browse books, puzzles, balls, crafts, and science and educational games.

April 24th and 25th Kemah hosts South Seas Weekend. The Boardwalk will become a tropical paradise with exotic island dancers, Samoan fire knife dancers and romantic Hawaiian hulas.

On April 29th the Kemah Visitor Center will celebrate its grand opening with refreshments, information and brochures.

On May 6th, a Caribbean rock 'n' roll band called Key West will kick off Rock the Dock. Every Thursday throughout the summer, Latin dance bands, blues bands, Cajun, pop, funk and hot rocking bands will electrify the sea air on the Boardwalk.
