The scenic Texas hill country beckons everyone who relishes peace, simple living, and natural beauty. Wimberley's 13,000 residents live in the heart of that unhurried splendor which attracts vacationers, particularly retirees seeking retreat from hectic cities and "winter snowbirds" escaping colder climates. Although only 45 minutes southwest of the capitol city of Austin, this quaint little town is far removed from the pressures of the world.
Acres of natural beauty surround Wimberley. Lush green hills rise through morning mist from the valleys where leisurely drives provide glimpses of deer, bobcats, raccoons, coyotes, bluebirds, migrating hummingbirds and the brilliant red, blue and yellow painted buntings. In early to mid-October, clouds of Monarch butterflies flutter though the area in their migration south. Some residents entice them to linger a few extra days by placing juicy watermelon slices out for them to sip on. In springtime, the hillsides bloom with bright Indian paintbrushes, bluebonnets, and wild roses. Frontier type store fronts line the small-town streets and remind of Old West days. Despite the suggestion of horse-drawn wagons, visitors find several RV parks and dozens of bed and breakfasts near Cypress Creek and the Blanco River, sometimes called the "singing river". Accommodations are mostly secluded and rustic or cozy and romantic, and offer opportunities to observe birds, explore nature trails, feed the ducks and wildlife, canoe down the river, hunt fossils, or simply stargaze from the old porch rockers at night. In winter, when northers bring nippy temperatures, a steaming cup of cappuccino and a flickering fireplace soothe the soul. Although serene and small, Wimberley offers more than just scenic beauty and wildness. Market Days, every first Saturday of the month through December, feature festive food and live entertainment while shoppers search for bargains and, occasionally, the little town sponsors professional quality concerts. Popular day tours to Fischer Store Loop or Aquarena in San Marcos, just 15 miles to the east, provide a change in entertainment. During Christmas, the old Blanco County Courthouse, a two story limestone structure built in 1885, sparkles with elaborate decorations as part of the famous "Trail of Lights". And, of course, just 50 miles to the west, San Antonio bustles with everything a major city has to offer including its magnificent Riverwalk. Wimberley accommodates everyday needs with retail stores, a computer sales and service, a library, and a choice of Protestant churches. For the mature crowd, Wimberley's senior citizen center hosts bingo, bridge, canasta, dominoes, quilting, and woodworking. Health needs are accommodated by physical therapy, massage therapy, yoga, chiropractic facilities, and a veterinary clinic for animal members of the family. Go To Page: 1 2
