Chanukah 2000!

menorah
Favorite foods include latkes (potato pancakes fried in oil), gelt (chocolate coins), and soofganiyot (special jelly-filled donuts). Children play dreidel, spinning a top for candy. Like many Jewish holidays, we emphasize the involvement of children, who will perpetuate our traditions and culture.

As a Jew, I love the warmth of this holiday and the closeness of family. Since Chanukah lasts over a week, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate with all of the people I love. Also, I enjoy having these special traditions, when the rest of the world is celebrating Christmas. On Christmas day, we usually go to the movies, and try to stay busy, even though all of the stores are closed.

Chanukah offers important social lessons of tolerance and perseverance, to people of any religion. We can all benefit from learning about cultures other than our own.
