Purim on the Web

Purim is another one of the Jewish holidays that is both fun for children and meaningful for adults. On the evening of March 1, 1999, we will remember, with gratitude, when Jews living in Persia were narrowly saved from extermination. Through the holidays, we teach our children the lessons and history of our ancestors, and we find ourselves enriched by the beauty and wisdom of our people's traditions.

There are 5 mitzvot associated with the observance of Purim:

1) Megillah reading - We listen to the Megillah. It is read on Purim night and again during the day.

2) Al HaNisim - We recite "Al HaNisim," in which we thank God for the miracle of Purim, during the evening and day prayers of Purim and also in the grace-after-meals.

3) Mishloach Manot - On Purim day, we send gifts (Mishloach Manot) of at least two kosher ready-to-eat foods to at least one friend.

4) Matanot LaEvyonim - On Purim during the day time we give charity to at least two poor people. This is called "Matanot LaEvyonim."

5) Se'udat Purim - We eat a festive meal on Purim day to celebrate the miracle.
