It's about time to start thinking about summer reggae festivals again. While I myself haven't been to an outdoor festival since 1998, I'm hoping that I can make one this year, even if it means driving to Norfolk to do it. Here's a brief overview of some of the biggies:
Reggae Sumfest
Currently the largest Jamaican-based reggae festival, Sumfest returns strong this year, adding an extra day. It will be in Montego Bay from July 30 through August 6.
Reggae Sunsplash
Though the web site has no info, there is a one-day Sunsplash scheduled for Trempealeau Hotel, Trempealeau, WI this Saturday May 6. There may well be other events, but I could not find any further info.
Reggae on the River
From August 4-6, the Reggae on the River Festival will take place at French's Camp in Piercy, California (200 miles north of San Francisco). In addition to many world reggae artists, some of the more well-known Jamaican and English artists are also on the line-up: Kymani Marley, Ranking Roger, Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Anthony B, and Tony Rebel will be performing. A festival of the same name will be in Norfolk, VA on September 8-9.
14th Annual UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival
Monday May 29 will be the reggae portion of the UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival. Lined up for this year: Mr. Vegas, Spragga Benz, Yami Bolo, Frankie Paul, Detour Posse, and Rub-a-Dub.
Vermont Reggae Festival
This year's festival will be from July 28-29.
Long Beach Reggae Explosion 2000
This year in Long Beach, expect to see Half Pint, Sugar Minott, The Skeletones, and others. The festival is on July 29.
