Correction.........
Many thanks, to one of my readers that wrote in and informed me that Robbie Gordon drove for Felix Sabates, Not for Joe Gibbs, as I alluded in last week's article. Driver Of The Year......... First Quarter Voting
The ballots are in for the first quarter of the Driver Of The Year award. Jeff Burton has won with 10 first place votes and 102 points, followed by Jeff Gordon with 48 points; drag racer John Force, 41 points; World of Outlaws driver Mark Kinser, 40 points; CART driver Greg Moore, 22 points.
Voting is done by 12 motorsports media members that select six from different forms of racing each quarter. Points are awarded by a sliding scale method. Also receiving votes were Mark Martin, and truck driver Ron Hornaday.
Charlotte......... Open Wheel Tragedy
All of us race fans are stunned and saddened by the three deaths and the dozen injuries suffered by fans in the stands who were struck by flying debris from a wreck during the IRL race last Saturday night. The debris consisted of a wheel and front end suspension parts off of one of the open wheel racers. A witness stated that the wheel came up in the stands like a rocket, and then bounced around.
Over the years, the majority of deaths and injuries to spectators have occurred at open wheel races, where the wheel and suspension parts aren't covered by fenders, and are of such a design, that they are larger and longer than Winston Cup cars. As they stick out from the car to the wheel, they tend to break off and fly around when a racer hits the wall.
We should all be aware of the danger of attending open wheel races. I think the safest place to watch these races is in front of the TV set. Hoods and parts have landed in the stands at Winston Cup races also, so we have to watch what's going on, and hope there's somewhere to move to, instantly, while we're packed in the stands like sardines?
California........ The California 500
Jeff Gordon was back in his usual form, winning his third race of the season, and the 45th of his career. He's bounced back from some DNF's this season, to take control of the field and lead the way to the checkered flag once again.
