Winston Cup Weekend Off...........
The next race (7th) is the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, Bristol, Tennessee. It will be televised live on April 11th at 1 PM by ESPN.
Rainy day pay day for Hornaday. The NAPACARD 200 at Evergreen Speedway near Monroe, Washington, was the 100th race of the Craftsman Truck Series. Ron Hornaday, driver of the No. 16 NAPA Chevrolet for Teresa Earnhardt, has competed in all of the 100 races, which made him eligible for the $100.000 bonus, along with four other drivers. This was the second win this season for Ron (he won last week in Phoenix), and the 25th win of his career.
The big thing about winning a Nashville race is the Guitar trophy. Every driver wants one, and now Jeff Green has his, in only the second win of his Busch Series career. Jeff is a former track champion at Nashville, along with Sterling Marlin, who spun out with only fifty laps remaining, ruining his chances for a win because of a blown tire. Matt Kenseth was also taken out of contention during that melee, making it easy for the third place driver at the time, to take the victory.
The Monte Carlo won't be the only new kid on the block next season. Ford has been working on their 2000 Taurus race car also. The street version will be changed a lot, but the Winston Cup version will only have subtle changes in the nose and tail, and the rear window will be rectangle instead of the oval that it is now. The changes are being made so that the present NASCAR testing templates can still be used, so the aerodynamics won't be altered much at all. They will probably be enhanced to where they will be close to the current Monte Carlo, which has the aerodynamic advantage over Ford and Pontiac.
Jack Roush is paving the way for Matt Kenseth. This new company is designed to get Busch team owner Robbie Rieser and driver Matt Kenseth moved up to Winston Cup racing. The new plan is going into effect pretty quick, as it calls for Matt Kenseth to race in five Winston Cup races this season. No word yet on sponsorship, but Jack Roush shouldn't have any problems there. A sponsor would love to jump on that bandwagon!
