NASCAR Preview and Press Guide

© Thomas M. Sampson

If you are a serious NASCAR fan, you need to purchase the official NASCAR Preview and Press Guide. The Guide is in magazine type format (8.5 X 11.5), usually at least 410 pages of official statistics and schedules. It went up in price last year to $8.99 from the previous $8 (Canada, $10.99). The '99 edition will be out the first part of February, and will have all of the '98 statistics added to those of previous years. It is next to impossible to find at newsstands in some areas, but you can order it from your newsstand vendor, or get it like I do from a TV ad on the NASCAR shows like RPM Tonight on ESPN II or Inside NASCAR on TNN. Just give them your credit card number over the phone, and they'll send it to you for $10 a pop, plus shipping and handling. It's published by UMI Publications Inc., PO Box 30036, Charlotte, NC 28230-0036. They also have subscription rates of $11 per year, $16 outside of US possessions.

Here is a listing of subjects covered from the table of contents in the '98 Preview and Press Guide:

  • Crowning 1997 Winston Cup Champion
  • '97 Rookie of the Year

As one can see by the above listing, the Guide is packed full of info on just about every aspect of NASCAR racing. It also has a NASCAR organization chart with a listing of their four offices in New York, NY; Daytona Beach, FL; Charlotte, NC; and Scotts Valley, CA. The chart lists everyone involved in the NASCAR offices, from the president to the receptionists. The Guide is also very generous with pictures of the season's cars, drivers, crew chiefs, owners, and some of the teams.
