Busch Takes Bristol Again

3/29/04...... NASCAR's rules change involving the new softer compound tire and the one inch reduction to rear spoiler height has been under the microscope since they began with the Las Vegas race. Up to this point, the rules have gotten mixed reviews from teams and fans.

The way things have gone at Bristol Motor Speedway this past weekend may change those reviews some. It's apparent that the change didn't work so well on the high banked concrete surface of Bristol. The different tire compound along with the spoiler reduction caused a lot of damage to a whole slew of racecars. It was evident in practice and qualifying for both the Busch and Cup events that something was radically wrong. The Busch and Cup races were an added element in the dissatisfaction of the new setup.

It appears that the setup just doesn't agree with concrete tracks. It remains to be seen what will happen before the circuit makes its first stop at Dover International Speedway, a one mile concrete oval built practically with the same layout as Bristol except for the size. Hopefully NASCAR will allow a different tire to be used there as it did with Rockingham and the restrictor plate venues.

Kurt Busch won the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway for the third year in a row. The win was his first of the season and the ninth of his career. The first two races Busch won at Bristol created an angry furor among a good share of fans in attendance. He was booed loudly the first two races, and was also booed this season, but not as bad. His problems with Jimmy Spencer and his cocky "take no prisoners" attitude has made him the bad guy in Cup racing, taking a lot of the heat off of Kevin Harvick.

Rusty Wallace claimed he had the fastest car in the race during his post race interview. He did have a fast car, or "hot rod" as he likes to all them, although his wasn't the fastest. Regardless, Wallace fought hard for his first win since 2001 but just couldn't make it happen.

Following Wallace were Kevin Harvick, Sterling Marlin, and Matt Kenseth, rounding out the top five. Ken Schrader finished sixth, racking up a top ten finish for the new sponsor, Schwans Home Service, on the No. 49 BAM Racing Dodge. Ryan Newman, Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon, and Michael Waltrip got top ten finishes as well. The top ten starters and how they finished:
