1/4/04/........ As the new year arrives once again, the NASCAR Cup Series becomes the recipient of a new sponsor. Winston is out and Nextel is in. Please note the new Nextel Cup logo that was released to the media last September 22nd. This is the logo that is planned for use during the tenure of the ten year contract between Nextel and NASCAR for the Cup Series sponsorship. This past November, Nextel began paving the way for the marketing and communications development of their upcoming inaugural season with NASCAR. Jill Gregory was named director of NASCAR Nextel Series marketing. She will be responsible for all NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series marketing activities, building a team, promoting the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series brand and developing and maintaining relationships with NASCAR, teams, drivers, promoters and fans. Prior to joining Nextel, Gregory was vice president and general manager for GMR Marketing, where she managed all sports, event and hospitality activities for Visa USA and other clients. Jill has previous experience with motorsports marketing with NASCAR and Texaco Inc. Her sports property management experience also includes entertainment events associated with the NFL, Disney, Broadway, and the Visa Triple Crown. Nextel also named Mike Mooney as director of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Corporate Communications. He will be responsible for creating a team and managing media relations, community relations and special events for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. Prior to joining Nextel, Mooney was principal for Cox Marketing Group where he was responsible for strategy, execution and measurement for clients' sports public relations programs. Mike has over ten years experience in motorsports public relations and has worked with the NHRA, CART, ATP Tour, PGA Tour, CITGO, and NASCAR. Gregory and Mooney are the principal leaders in the Nextel organization that are responsible for the present buildup of teams to promote the series through marketing and communications. The timing of such a vast undertaking seems to be a bit off, as the Cup Season begins this month with testing at Daytona International Speedway as the infamous Daytona Speedweeks get under way as a buildup to the upcoming Budweiser Shootout competition on February 7th. This doesn't give Gregory and Mooney a lot of time to build their teams and get systems fine tuned for their debut.
