The Afro-American Historical Society Museum is located in Jersey City and opened in 1984.

The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center is closed on Mondays and all holidays except for Martin Luther King day. The museum is located in Wilberforce, Ohio. The permanent exhibit is about blacks in the 1950's. You can visit it virtually at http://www.ohiohistory.org/places/groups...

Another ambitious project is the Museum of African American History in Detroit, Michigan. http://www.detnews.com/maah. Closed on Mondays. This museum opened in 1997 and is a cooperative effort between the city of Detroit and black community leaders. There is an arresting exhibit of eight historical stations that comprise the permanent collection.

There are many other museums across North America dedicated to the Afro-American experience or dealing with one aspect of it - such as black cowboys of the west.

Our next article will deal with some of the preservation questions that museum curators and directors must deal with on a day to day basis.
