Cooking Up A Mystery

These crime solvers not only solve mysteries but also can whip up a super soufflé on the side. Culinary mysteries are not new but they have become extremely popular in recent years.

Author Diane Mott Davidson and her Goldy Bear series is one of the most popular of this category. Goldy Bear is a caterer in Aspen Meadows, Colorado. She has an abusive ex-husband, a son, and a very attentive police detective, Tom Schultz. The first book in the series, Catering to Nobody, was an Agatha, Anthony and Macavity award nominee. So far the series is up to ten books, the latest being Sticks and Scones. Each book contains recipes.

Before Goldy Bear appeared on the scenes, widowed chef Eugenia Potter was cooking and solving crimes. Eugenia Potter is in her 60's and spends her time in New England or at her ranch in Arizona. She is featured in three books written by her creator Virginia Rich. After Rich's death in 1985, author Nancy Pickard (author of the award-winning Jenny Cain series) was commissioned to continue the series based on unfinished manuscripts left by Rich. Ms. Pickard has written an additional three books in this series. The latest one is The Secret Ingredient Murders. Recipes are featured in each book.

Caterer and minister's wife, Faith Sibley Fairchild, lives in Aleford, Massachusetts. Formerly a New York gourmet caterer, Faith has married a minister and has moved to this small town. She is now a mother and has her own catering business, as well as being a sleuth on the side. The first book in the series, The Body in the Belfry, won an Agatha award. In The Body in the Big Apple, a prequel, we get to see a younger Faith, single and running her first catering business in New York, when she meets up with an old school friend in trouble. Her latest book is Body in the Moonlight. Recipes are featured in each book, written by Katherine Hall Page.

Other caterer/chef amateur detective series are Cathie John's Kate Cavanaugh series set in Columbus, Ohio, Janet Laurence's Darina Lisle series set in the West Country of England, and Amy Myers' August Didier series set in Victorian England.

Next we have our inn and restaurant owners. Tamar Myers writes the Magdalena Yoder series. Magdalena is the owner and manager of a Mennonite inn located in Hernia, Pennsylvania. She has a sharp wit and tongue, brought about from living with her younger sister, Susannah. Magdalena was first introduced in Too Many Crooks Spoil the Broth in 1994. Crepes of Wrath is Magdalena's latest adventure. This series also contains some yummy Pennsylvania Dutch recipes. Ms. Myers is also the author of the Abigail Timberlake series.
