Guides/Starting Places
FindLaw
Findlaw provides a great starting-off point for legal research. It contains a full-text, searchable database of all law reviews and journals on the Internet and is updated frequently. There are sections on legal news, legal forms, continuing legal education, organizations, law firms and lawyers, law schools, judicial opinions and case law, consultants, reference resources, and much more.
Lexnotes
Another excellent resource, Lexnotes "provides categorized and searchable links to research sources, bibliographies, pathfinders, articles, reviews, papers, legal news, and tips". I was very impressed with the comprehensiveness of this site - check out the Research Sources section, for instance. Lexnotes is maintained by T.R. Halvorson, author of Law of the Super Searchers: The Online Secrets of Top Legal Researchers, ISBN 0-910965-34-X.
The Virtual Chase
This is an excellent site for for anyone interested in doing research using the Internet. It contains articles on specific research issues and topics, as well as annotated guides including the Legal Research Guide and the Company Information Guide. The "How To ..." section is a great source for research tips and tricks on a variety of subjects, not just law. Other highlights include How to Pick a Search Engine, and Evaluating the Quality of Information on the Internet. The Virtual Chase is "designed especially for lawyers and other experienced legal researchers, the site guides visitors through the Internet chaff in an effort to find its grains of wheat". Expertly maintained by Genie Tyburski.
AllLaw
Similar in scope to Findlaw, AllLaw is a legal portal providing access to a wide variety of legal information. Find federal and state resources, legal journals, legal forms, information on continuing legal education, legal support services, organizations, reference resources, a lawyer lookup, news, and features such as "lawyer of the week". The Legal Topics Index is a great place to find information concerning Family Law, Business and Corporate Law, Criminal Law, Tax Law, and more.
LLRX.com
LLRX, the Law Library Resource Xchange, provides great feature articles, breaking legal, technology and research related news, as well as legal resources. Check out this great article, Annotated Guide to a Select Group of Reliable Free Web Sites for Legal Researchers by editor Sabrina I. Pacifici. The LLRXBuzz column, focusing on legal research resources and written by Web searching guru Tara Calishain, is published each Monday. There's a ton of great stuff here.
