80s Soundtracks in 90s Movies

In the last year, there has been a rash of "retro" or '80s movies. This is a good thing, because '80s movies turn into '80s soundtracks. This just proves the adage that good things come back around.

The most popular three soundtracks are the recent The Wedding Singer, last year's Gross Pointe Blank, and Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion.

The Wedding Singer
is set in 1985 as Adam Sandler's character aspiring to be a songwriter. The soundtrack has a number of good songs including The Presidents Of The United States Of America's cover of "Video Killed The Radio Star," Culture Club's "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me," The Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," The Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now,", Billy Idol's" White Wedding" and the hysterical "Rappers Delight."

Grosse Point Blank is about John Cusack's return to his home town to combine his high school reunion, a contract assassin job and an attempt to rekindle his romance with an old flame. Its soundtrack leans much more to the abstract, buried songs but you find a few pop ones like a-ha's "Take On Me," Nena's "99 Luftballoons," The Bangles' "Walk Like An Eyptian" and Pete Townshend's "Let My Love Open The Door."

The most kooky and stereotypical movie was Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion about, well, like a high school reunion dude. This soundtrack is chock full of super-hit '80s tunes like Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science", Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy", Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days", Robert Palmer's "Addicted To Love," Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," Go-Go's "We Got The Beat and Howard Jones' "No One Is To Blame," plus a host more of fabulous songs.

I think that's mostly what I have! The '80s movies were full of good songs. "The Breakfast Club" had Simple Minds' Don't You (Forget About Me), a number of movies had Bonnie Tyler's Holding ...

I love the 80s! And I'm not ashamed to say it!

Music from that time brings back some GREAT memories. I listened to "new wave" music as a pre-teen in California, and when I moved to Virginia in 19 ...
