Update on U2: Where Are They Now?

What is our most famous Irish supergroup up to now?  Since the late 90s, music from these guys have been a little sketchy. No question on whether they can survive.

The band has being surving since 1978 where all the boys met in school - guitarist David "The Edge" Evans, Paul "Bono" Hewson, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr.

Recently however, the band, or more specifically Bono, has been more involved with political righteous and ideals then music. Bono has been invloved with numerous humaritian causes between NetAid appearances with Wyclef Jean and the benefit single "New Day", Jubilee 2000 to end third world debt in which he just won a 'Man of the Year' award in France and Amnesty International. Bono also was slated to put an appearance at the Washington, D.C. Millennium gala.

Hopefully, the band is also contributing to all these projects, because after all, U2 has signed a deal worth $50 million plus in 1998 (and this should dispel any notion that the band may break up since now they have contractual obligations to deliver) and can probably end third world debt on his own. He needs to put his money worth his mouth is.

The only musical inclination from them has been 1998's The Best of 1980-1990. This was supposed to be first of the three compilations to be released with the last one to be Christmas 1999. Did we all miss something? However, recently rumblings from Bono is said that the new CD is nearly finished with two more songs to go for a 2000 release.

Bono, solo-wise, has recorded "New Day" for NetAid and recorded a duet with INXS' Michael Hutchence on a song titled "Slide Away" that will appear on Hutchence's forthcoming after-death solo album. He has also appeared on VH1's Behind the Music for the INXS/Hutchence episode.

The rest of the band keeps out of the limelight except maybe for Adam Clayton and his need for supermodels. What about the musical goings-on of U2 now? In a January 13th Rolling Stone piece, U2 has been confirmed for the soundtrack for "The Million Dollar Hotel" (note: website is in german!) will include seven U2/Bono songs set for release in March after the film's showing at the Berlin Film Festival a month earlier. The soundtrack will include two new U2 and three Bono solo songs as well as two covers. The first single is tentatively "The Ground Beneath Her Feet"
