Rhino Records: Millennium Party Plus Some© Michele Morabito
Rhino Records are probably the greatest archive collection of artists you never heard of or thought you would never hear from again. Its most current catalog boasts of (surprise) a Millennium Series 5 CD collection.
Its internet presence is very good; for it has a merchandising page, ordering online options, easy naviagation of information and track listings in real audio and QuickTime. The millennium party series out with a total of 5 CDs, few of them being "New Wave", "Hip Hop" an "Classic Party". The track listing to "New Wave" version includes the best of '80s darlings. It contains Rock Lobster by The B-52's, Whip It by Devo, Come On Eileen from Dexy's Midnight Runners, Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) by the irreplacable and newly reformed Eurythmics, The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats plus much more. Millenium Party: Classic Rock features '70-'90s artists but has some good '80s feelings to it. The '80s wasn't all bubble-gum pop! Artists include songs by Queen, Foreigner, Chicago and David Bowie. Check out the track listing. The Millennium Hip-Hop Party includes some '80s tunes, further showing '80s were more than video and bad haircuts. Songs included are classics like White Lines (Don't Don't Do It) by Grandmaster & Melle Mel (and redone fantasticly by Duran Duran in concert), Walk This Way from Run-D.M.C. with Aerosmith and Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc who came into the '90s Rhino Records also boasts cooperation with the post-MTV generation with VH1: The Big 80's - Power Ballads. Some '80s hard rock bands actually had a teary side running through their wild side. Rhino defines the power ballad as the song "where metal and romance collide" (and got these bands some MTV airtime). Memorable songs include Fly To The Angels by Slaughter, Something To Believe In from Poison, the tearful The Search Is Over sung by Survivor, the ultimate Is This Love by Whitesnake, the original girl power We Belong from Pat Benatar and the mournful When The Children Cry performed by White Lion. Off from VH1 and onto its mother, monster mogul MTV. Rhino has delved into their archives and came up with a four volume series called MTV: The First 1000 Years - New Wave. Don't know about 1,000 years but they have certainly made their impact since its debut with the airing of The Buggles' Video Killed The Radio Star in 1981 and made the phrase "I Want My MTV!" into a national youth cry.
