Commercials Using 80s Songs

A lot of commercials lately are using '80s songs in their advertising. How great is that? A whole new generation to realize great music.

One of the latest ones is Madonna's "Dress You Up" from her debut CD in the latest GAP ad. The song never really anywhere in the early '80s but now it will. She did have a video for it, but it is one of her least known songs in her impressive catalog. GAP also signed up former Stray Catter Brian Setzer for their khaki commercial in the recent past as well.

Gary Numan's "Cars" was in a German (?) beer commercial. "Cars" went up to #9 in the US in 1983 and hit pop culture status. Roadrunner Records in the UK are giving September 13th as the UK release date for the Fear Factory "Cars" single according to NuWorld News.

Volkswagen Beetle commercials have been quite fantastic in featuring really great '80s songs.  One is "Mr. Roboto" from Styx and other obscure ones.

"Life in an English Town" was heard in an Acuvue eyecare commercial as well as an "A Team" reference appeared (ala "we pity the fool..") in a Mitsubishi sports car commercial.

In New Zealand, a national telephone company called Clear Communications, uses the song "Brass in Pocket" by The Pretenders for their latest TV ad campaign. The lyrics, "I'm special...so special...gotta have some of your attention, give it to me", are used to show that customers are "not a number" and truly valuable to the company.

Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train"  is used for a Sports Utility Vehicle in Canada.
