Nancy Boy has two superstar kids in the group, Donovan Leitch the singer (Donovan's son) and Jason Nesmith the guitarist (Monkees Nesmith's son) with Terry Fox on bass and Mike Williams on drums rounding out the band. They formed several years ago and are influenced by their famous fathers, and other acts like David Bowie, Gary Numan, the Dolls, Japan and Soft Cell.
They project the image of seemingly endless partygoers, they are Saks 5th Avenue models and lead singer Donovan Leitch married model Kirsty Hume. The band has opened for Neurotic Outsiders, whose band members themselves include Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Matt Slocum and Duff McKagan of Guns 'N Roses fame and ex-Duran Duran bassist John Taylor.
Nancy Boy likes to be glam-rock and play pop songs (as if the name of the band didn't explain it enough). Their best songs in concert are "
Deep Sleep Motel," "
Johnny Chrome & Silver," "
Fox Trot" and "
Ultrasex" off their Elektra Records releases (they have been dropped from the label last year and in talks now with a new record company).
In fact, what is considered the first Nancy Boy classic, "
Johnny Chrome And Silver" from their debut LP,
Promosexual, the British press took notice, with New Musical Express' Paul Moody calling it the "Duran Duran song that never was." They are more popular in UK than in the US - a prime example of pop worthiness.
It is always an experience going to a Nancy Boy gig - the fans, fans with cameras, the interesting mix of people and the interesting venues. Most often than not, the band plays at Don Hill's Niteclub in NYC. The mix of people is the topper to every gig. For Nancy Boy, this usually includes Donovan's model wife, Kirsty Hume, his sister actress Ione Skye and/or brother-in-law Beastie Boy Adam Durwitz. And sometimes, they have this posse of model and model-like people acting like a cool NYC "in-crowd" appearing at each gig.
Before the band goes on, they usually are mingling in the crowd checking out the opening band. Most endearing about the evening was the drummer's mom videotaping the performance.
