July 13, 1985 was the single most important day musically of the '80s, and one of the most important musical events of all time. That was the day dozens of musicians played a 16 hour concert for African famine relief.
One concert was at Wembley Stadium in England and the other at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Phil Collins performed in England, hopped on the Concorde, and performed again in Philadelphia.
The concert, masterminded and organized by Sir Bob Geldof, was broadcast worldwide to an audience of 1.5 billion people. It eventually raised over $140 million for the cause and raised global awareness of the problems in Africa.
Why did it take nearly 20 years for this concert to be released on DVD? At the time, Geldof was adamant that the concert not even be recorded because of legal reasons. The BBC recorded the concert anyway, but over the years some of the footage was destroyed or went missing. The US producers of the concert did not record it, but MTV found 100 uncatalogued tapes that ended up being the US portion of the concert.
There are still some missing performances, but the majority of them have been preserved. It is important that this music and cultural event was preserved and we are able to see the performances again.
This DVD set is not perfect. There are some performances and part of performances that aren't here because of legal issues and the reasons. There are also a few minor technical glitches, but all in all this is a wonderful addition to any '80s music fan's collection.
The Live Aid DVD set is 10 hours long and consists of 4 DVDs. The list price is only $39 and you can find it for under $30 at some locations. All proceeds from the DVD will go to the Band Aid Trust.
