National Finals Rodeo Changes Its Name

The 43rd PRCA “Super Bowl” of professional rodeo has a new name. The NFR is now called the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR). The hard-working PRCA board managed to finagle a landmark deal making Wrangler Jeans and Shirts the first title sponsor in the history of NFR, the world championship of pro rodeo since 1959.

Wrangler isn’t new to the PRCA sponsor list. The company first signed on as a sponsor in 1947. Since 2000, Wrangler has been the title sponsor of the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour, televised prime time TNN and ESPN2. This year’s tours totaled 20 PRCA-sanctioned rodeos for top cowboy competition that culminated in the Tours’ climatic events, the Copenhagen Cup Finales in Las Vegas and Dallas where Wrangler provided purse money to even winners. So it seems the next logical step was the “new” WNFR.

Let’s recap why you should include the WNFR in your must-see rodeo events.

Traditionally in December, Vegas tourism comes to a grinding halt. But thanks to the WNFR, the flashing neon lights and the bustling streets of Sin City are alive and bucking at least ten days of December. Always the first Friday of December through the second Sunday, National Finals Rodeo tickets are the hottest and toughest ticket in town, and with a record $4.6 million rodeo purse, all the top 15 cowboys in each event will be trying their luck at taking home the buckle and the bucks.

Since 1985, the NFR has become Thomas & Mack Center arena’s biggest client, bringing in more than 170,000 fans during the 10-day event. But just because you don’t have a ticket isn’t a reason to stay at home. There’s more to do in Vegas than you’ll ever have time for, and Vegas rolls out its streets for WNFR with top-class country artists and Western themed shows, like the new one at Bellagio. Gilles Ste-Croix, director of creation for “O” and Mystere, presents an equestrian extravaganza with “30 majestic horses and 27 spirited artists.” For more details, call (702) 796-9999 or go to http://www.bellagio.com or directly to http://www.chevaltheatre.com.

Thousands of eager fans flock to shop for myriad Western-oriented products at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Cowboy Christmas Gift Show. The show is held at the Las Vegas Convention Center this year (2001) from December 6-15 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. You name it Cowboy Christmas has got it! In the over 2000,000 square feet of exhibit space and 400 exhibitors, the official NFR sponsored shop-till-you-drop display will net you everything from leather goods, belts, buckles, boots, saddle, jewelry and crafts to a chance to take a look at the new Dodge pick ‘em up trucks.
