I BETTER GET SOME EXERCISE; I STILL HAVE BABY FAT TO LOSE!

© Carrie Webbenhurst

“Hey, Maureen?” I asked my mother-in-law one day. “How long can I blame my weight on my babies?” “All your life,” she stated. Well, alright!!

The day after the boys were born – I, magically, lost half the 50 pounds I had gained while pregnant. The other 25 took another month or so –but they, too, disappeared. Hey, this was no big deal – losing all that “baby-fat”.

The truth was, even though the pounds disappeared, the “fat” stayed behind (and in front, on my arms, legs, face, etc.)

I had read all sorts of articles about “exercising with your baby to lose the weight and get back in shape.” Well, I’ve never been one of these women who are all-consumed with my weight (I long to be thin and in better shape – I just don’t let it consume my every waking thought), and – heck – I had two babies to take care of. I’ll bet those women who wrote those articles didn’t give birth to twins!!

I just plain didn’t have time to think about losing weight and getting in shape. And then I read an article about women who had twins and a cesearean – and my eyes were opened. The article said nothing short of plastic surgery (ie: tummy tuck) would take care of my flabby, stretched out stomach. Well then, why worry about my weight – I’ll just concentrate on taking care of my babies.

This is another piece of advice I pass on to all expectant mothers – multiple birth or not. A new mother’s main focus has just got to be that newborn child and not her weight and body shape. Unless that mother is a Super model – her weight should be one of her last priorities. Now, I’m not saying that she should just go hog wild and eat whatever and not pay attention to what she is doing – just make your child your #1 priority and not your weight.

So this is what I did – I took care of my babies and didn’t even think about my weight (well, ok when I tried on certain pairs of jeans – I did think briefly about my weight). So, imagine my surprise when I discovered that while taking care of my babies – I was also getting some exercise and toning in anyway – without even trying. I think this is probably the key to new mothers getting back in shape. Don’t think about what you are doing – just do it and you’ll get back to where you were eventually.
