Clare's Luxurious Dromoland Castle

Near the town of Newmarket-on-Fergus, you'll find not only one of the top luxury hotels in Ireland but one of the best in Europe. Dromoland Castle uniquely combines Old World charm with opulent luxury - a combination that has attracted royal visitors and famous celebrities as guests.

The original castle here dates back to the 16th century when it was the ancestral home of the O'Briens. The O'Brien family was directly descended from the renowned Brian Boru, the last High King of Ireland in the 10th century.

Today Dromoland Castle is a refurbished hotel that seduces visitors with period decor and modern amenities. Each of the 75 large bedrooms is decorated in its own individual style. There is a great attention to detail with beautiful damask wallpaper, custom-designed carpets and antique furnishings. From each room you'll get picturesque views of the castle's immense grounds.

While the character of Dromoland is certainly still 16th century, the facilities are all modern and visitors don't lack any luxury they could possibly want. The estate offers an array of activities like golf, tennis, cycling and fishing and the restaurant serves up some of the best food you'll find in Ireland. In fact, "Egon Ronay," a prestigious British travel guide has named Dromoland Castle's Earl of Thomond restaurant the "best restaurant in Ireland."

Of course such luxury is going to cost you and a night's stay at the castle will set you back anything between 140 Irish punts (US$158) for a standard room per night to 810 Irish punts (US$916) for the Presidential Suite per night.

But for those who can't afford to stay here, Dromoland Castle is a recommended attraction that you shouldn't miss as a day trip on your tour of Co. Clare.
