Uncle Sam Says...

A lot of the little bit of mail I get from readers is written by our men and women in the Armed Forces living abroad. It seems that distance education is a perfect match for their nomadic lifestyles. The trouble for many of them is trying to find the right match with the proper accreditation. This is already a difficult prospect given the novelty of such programs and will only get worse until their numbers multiply to the point where someone steps up and initiates a standard.

Well, the Department of Education may be working on that. The Office of Educational Technology (OET) "plays an integral role in expanding and improving access to technology and serves as a catalyst in bringing effective uses of education technology into classrooms..." One example of how they are doing this is the Federal Resource for Educational Technology. This is a link from the main site: www.ed.gov/Technology to hundereds of federally supported education resources available to distance education students. There are also links to pertinent and interesting articles relevant to the future of distance education. Artiles dealing with the "Digital Divide" and reports from leading conferences discussing technologies' effectiveness in the classroom. For some there's never any desire to question the status quo, but for others interested in seeking some answers to the digital daydream, the OET is your best bet for unbiased information in this technology-crazed economy. Afterall, just look what old Uncle Sam did to Microsoft...
