Organize Your Freezer – Part II

© Kerri Bazzell

Sherrie had been planning her next freezer session when the phone rang. It was her good friend, Chris. "I need some help, Sher," she said. "I'm having trouble with the new freezer."

"What's wrong? Isn't it working?" Sherrie knew that Chris's grandmother had given her a small chest-type freezer when she moved to a retirement center last month. Sherrie was surprised that Chris was having problems already. It was a fairly new freezer.

"It's not that, Sher," Chris said quickly. "It's just...well, I'm having a little trouble getting in to the freezer. I mean, I can't reach the bottom. It's such a hassle. I didn't think about it when I was putting stuff in last month. Now I can't get several of the packages that are on the bottom."

Sherrie tried hard to stifle a chuckle. Chris was a petite woman, and Sherrie had a mental picture of Chris trying not to fall into the freezer while trying to reach the bottom. "Well, I don't know, Chris," she said, "Maybe you could put a few boxes or something in the very bottom for everything to sit on so it's not so low."

"Yeah, that would help. I have a little more room right now than I need," Chris acknowledged. "I'm also having to get a lot of stuff out everytime I need something that's underneath."

Sherrie was quiet for a few seconds while she thought. "You know, Chris, I just cleaned out my freezer last month, and I got it all organized. If you want, I'll come over tomorrow and help you get yours fixed up."

"Oh, thanks SO much, Sher! You're the best!" Chris cheered. "I'll see you tomorrow."

The next morning, Sherrie showed up at Chris's house. After a cup of coffee at the breakfast table, they went out to the garage to take a look at the freezer. "I ended up emptying mine, then I put it all back in and made a little chart to tell where everything was," Sherrie offered.

They decided to do that. They used some cardboard boxes and packed everything in tight to help keep it cold. Sherrie picked up the wire basket that had come with the freezer. It was made to fit in the top of the freezer and slide from left to right. "What you need is a another one of these baskets. Then you could put smaller things in them, and take them out when you need to get into the bottom of the freezer."
