I moved into my new home in October of 1997. It was
late in the year and in order to move in we had to have sod so all that
was left was dead sod. I had my work cut out for me. I tried every kind
of fertilizer and products there is and nothing worked. I replaced the
front yard sod but since it I had a fence put up they could not get the
equipment back there to replace it so I had to deal with the problem
myself.
The first contest was Lowes/Briggs All American Lawn contest with a grand prize win of $5,000 which I put to good use in the garden like a new arbor and garden chairs and a Las Vegas vacation. The second contest I only won first place was Wal-Mart's Picture Perfect Yard contest and got to have a poster of my yard hanging in the garden department in Wal-Mart. I began to search the internet for more contest and came across Fernlea flower contest so I entered that one. I won first place, $300.00, which I will buy myself a new lawn mower with that prize. It took a lot of hard work sweating in the hot dry summer drought that we had for the past two years but it has been paying off. I seem to be temporarily addicted to searching the net for new garden sights and photo contest. Purple is my favorite flower color, anything from lythrium to verbena to cone flowers to purple wave petunias. I am constantly rearranging the flowers as if they were pieces of furniture until they find the place in the sun or shade where they are most comfortable. My latest addition to the garden is the natural stone path I put in last fall. And since my summer work was done, I painted my garden on a cabinet I have in my kitchen to remind me of my garden all year long. Fall seems to be the best time of the year here. The leaves are changing making a beautiful backdrop for taking photos. My sister and I like to dress up for Halloween and take our photos there. I made my son into a scary garden gargoyle to scare off the pesky squirrels. When it got too cold to do anything out in the garden I began to work on my tacky yard
