Quechua Hat II (knit version)
by
Lili Pintea-Reed
Here is the knit version of the quechua hat pattern I put up on the site last week. It is done in a nubby moss stitch to give it that macrame look. I hope that you enjoy making this as much as I did. If you can't work with double pointed needles just knit on two and seam up the back! Materials: number 8 (American) needles double pointed 2 oz. main color worsted weight 1 oz. contrasting color or colors worsted weight Pattern: Row 1- Knit one, purl one Row 2- Knit one, purl one Directions: Cast on 62 stitches and knit garter stitch for one round. Switch to moss stitch pattern (knit 1, purl 1) for all rounds. Moss stitch until piece measures 4 inches. Add contrasting color and knit two rounds. Return to main color for one round, then knit two more rows in contrasting color. This makes a nice decorative band around the hat. Shaping: Return to main color and knit three rounds, then begin decrease rows. *Knit two together, purl two together, work seven stitches in pattern.* Repeat * * until end of round. Knit two rows even. Then repeat decrease row. Knit one row even, then repeat decrease row spiraling aound the hat until only eight stitches are left on the needles. Knit two together until one stitch is left. Break off yarn and pull through loop. Ear Flaps: Lay Hat flat and find center of each side of hat. Count eight stitches from side edge and tart to pick up bottom edge stitches there. Pick up 16 stitches and then knit even for one row. Begin to decrease by knitting two stitches together at each side of a row. Knit even for one row. Repeat decrease. Alternate these two rows until there is one stitch left. Break off yarn and pull through loop. Weave in end. Finishing: To finish make tassel and add to top of hat. Weave in any free yarn ends. Voila! A wonderful hat. Lili
