I recently came across a new children's book entitled A Fish Named Spot, by Jennifer P. Goldfinger. This is a fun picture book about Simon, whose aunt brings him a dog. Unfortunately, the dog has to be returned almost immediately, because Simon is very allergic to it. He never even gets a chance to name the puppy. On a subsequent visit, Aunt Loretta brings an exotic fish, whom Simon promptly names "Spot". Spot gets an interesting change in diet, and become very dog-like. Both Simon and Spot enjoy this, but eventually Spot yearns for his former fishy-ness, and then the (mis)adventures really begin.
While reading this book, one thing that caught my attention are the wonderful illustrations -- they really add to the story. I realized that a review of this book based solely on my opinion was just not enough this time, and that I needed to consult some "experts". So, I told my nine year old and my seven year old that we had a new book to read. :-) After I finished reading the story, I asked for their opinions. Their initial reactions were: "I liked it!!" "I LOVED it!!" (My 12 year old abandoned the computer to listen to the story as well.) The kids pointed out some of their favorite parts, then my nine year old took the book from me and read the whole story aloud again. Then, the younger two fought over who would get to keep the book in their room. :-) A Fish Named Spot is a fun story for children with or without allergies. It is available from various online booksellers. For further information, visit: http://www.twbookmark.com/books/62/03163...
