The ground is all ready for the garden. It is filled with good quality soil and is anxious to grow beautiful and luscious plants. I have decided to grow a garden filled with our favourite vegetables. Be sure to plant vegetables and herbs that your family will enjoy.
At the North side of your garden install a trellis for the cucumbers and tomatoes. You may purchase tomato cages and have the trellis for the cucumbers only. The geography of your home will dictate when you can begin planting. Our home is in Southern Ontario, some of the seeds are planted two weeks before the last frost and others two weeks after the last frost. The rule of thumb is plant seeds two weeks before the long weekend of May 24 and plant the seedlings on the long weekend or shortly after. Plant the green onions, carrots, lettuce and cucumbers around the 7th of May. Plant the tomato seedlings and red pepper seedlings during the last week of May. Once the plants are in they require your love and attention. Follow the directions on the back of the seed packets for the green onions, carrots and lettuce. Save your frozen juice cans for the tomatoes. Place a juice can into the dirt and place your tomato seedlings in the can. Be sure to remove the bottom lid of the can. By placing the seedling in the can the tomato bug will have a difficult time eating the roots and destroying the plant. Once the tomato plant begins to sprout, wrap it around the trellis or tomato cage. The cucumber needs to be wrapped around the trellis as well. Water and weed on a weekly basis. Use the water collected from your buckets and with a watering can water the roots of the crops. Each week say goodbye to the weeds that will inevitably become a part of your garden. The weeds will steal nourishment that is needed by your plants by eliminating them at the roots you will be saving your crops.
