Tolkein: The World (Wide Web) of J. R. R. Tolkein

(Note: The Internet is a dynamic place and web sites can come and go quite quickly. This is one of my older and some of the links may not work anymore. If you find that this is the case I invite you to look at some of my more recent articles. My links section has my favorite links from past articles and is checked regularly for non working links. Summer is fast approaching and the rains of spring are almost upon us. (If your reading this in the Southern Hemisphere ignore that statement) These two details means that kids will soon be looking for something to do and what better than to read a good book? My views on TV have been stated in the past and nothing prepares a kid better for the world ahead than good reading skills. But what to read? I'm going to focus this week on the works of J. R. R. Tolkein. Tolkein's work could truly be described as great literature but I use the "l" word with a bit of trepidation. Nothing seems to turn people off of an author faster than saying that his works are literature. This means that you have to be really careful using the "l" word around kids.

The Hobbit is a great book for kids, the characters are clear (at least on the surface), the story is interesting the prose descriptive. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is a bit more challenging, the individual parts are longer the storylines are more complex and interwoven but it's still quite accessible to kids. The brevity required by length and time limitations prevents me from waxing too poetic on how good these works are but it's easy for you to find them in any bookstore, public or school library. Why not pick up the Hobbit and give it a try. Entering the world of J. R. R. Tolkein opens up a new vista for kids. They can learn how to write the language he invented, play games based on the characters and much more.

Your first stop on the Web to find Tolkein information should be T he J. R. R. Tolkein Information Page. This page is a huge listing of links to other Tolkein material including other Tolkein pages, games, graphics. mailing lists, on-line texts, and many other items.

Some selected sites (almost all of which are on the Information Page) are The Hobbit Hole which is similar to many other pages because it has images and short articles but especially stand out by virtue of the Lord of the Rings

Thanks for the nice comment Chelsea. I read Tolkein's books when I was about your age for the first time. I believe the Simerillion was the only other book about middle earth that Tolkein wrote though ...
