Scottish National Parliament On November 19 , 1998 the Scottish people decided in a National Election to establish a Scottish National Parliament. This will be the first time in 300 years that Scotland has had a parliament. A web site which gives a great deal of information about the history involved with the parliament and the country is liberty.web.co.uk. The body will be elected on May 6, 1999. Since 1997 Scotland has witnessed the longest election campaign in history. All political parties have worked towards the goal of having a strong representation in the first Scottish Parliament in almost 300 years. The results of this campaign will be known of the 7th of May this year, when the results of the previous day's election are announced. On the 1st of July the New Parliament will be officially opened. Initially the Parliament will sit in the Church of Scotland General Assembly Buildings on the Mound in Edinburgh. The Parliament will then assume full legislative powers and control will be handed to the Scottish Executive. Since then there has been much debate about the establishment of the Parliament especially where the new body would hold deliberations. The choice was finally a new building. The Scottish Parliament will be sitting in the Church of Scotland's General Assembly building on the Mound in Edinburgh for the first 2-3 years. The new building will be a part of the medieval burgh of Canongate. This historic site lies at the east end of the Royal Mile which links Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, official Scottish residence of the Queen. Come join my web site to celebrate this great event.
